Connectivism as a learning theory
Lin Armstrong addresses the core change influencing education (and reflected in other areas of society such as news, government, and scholarship): "Teaching and learning is for me mainly a matter of power. The teacher (or in the past a priest ) decides what the reading is to be and who should learn what. When this power changes the learning theory will change and a new theory will be needed". We will discuss power and control in greater detail later in the course. For now, it is worth noting that power shifts influence change (often in unpredictable ways). What happens when individuals interact with each other and around information without mediating agents? What happens when individuals (in theory) have control and agency? Deciphering Connectivism
Images are sometimes far more effective at communicating than text. Case in point - this comparison between Lego blocks and Magnetix. While the comparison isn't perfect (I'm interested not only in the formation of networks, but the *why* of these networks. Structure alone doesn't reveal this), it's as effective as any I have seen. CCK09 and learning
I just began this new online course, Connectivism and Connected Knowledge – CCK09, with George Siemens and Stephen Downes. I am excited to be in the class and enjoy the distributed format. As I have been reading the moodle forums for the course there has been a lot of discussion of the definition of connectivism. [...] September 17, 2009

Determinism
Well, that has been a long break from blogging, and a welcome one at that! On my long commute home this evening I was reflecting on connectivism, and the CCK08 course, and the word ‘Determinism’ came to mind.  I am not sure why this occurred, but will assume that there is some relevance to this revelation, [...] September 17, 2009

Thoughts on “New Literacy” and Motivation
I stumbled across an article from “Wired” this morning talking about the influence of social media on student literacy skills. (Yes, Wired tends to hype every new gadget as a revolution that will shortly transform the whole of human civilization, but if you’re a technophile and read it primarily as infotainment, it’s often pretty interesting.) I’ve [...] September 17, 2009

Deciphering Connectivism
After reading through the material yesterday on Connectivism for the CCK09 course, I’ve come up with the following visual representation of what I think it’s all about. Conctructivism Connectivism /td> /td> Legos Magnetix I’m of two minds about my attempt to decipher what connectivism is. On one hand, the above attempt could be considered constructivist since I did, after all, “construct” meaning [...] September 17, 2009

CCK09 begins
Our online course has started and people are already creating content and writing posts, including this one. This one is a bit critical of Connectiovism. "At one level we have a highly reductionist view – its all about the neural connections, how brains work at this low level. At the other level its about how people interact and make connections with other people. And entirely removed from this is any acceptance of higher level models or theories of how individuals may learn." If you want to follow along with the newsletter without subscribing, the . CCK09: Getting started...
Well, today officially kicks off the second MOOC on Connectivism. I posted earlier how I would set up my own PLN, and have pretty much decided to stick with that except for one exception: using Google Reader (GR). Although there is a Moodle forum set up for the course, I will be using GR as my main aggregator, or a way to bring related information to me through the use of a tag: CCK09.

The reason I´m taking this course is to pursue related research interests, specifically as they pertain to English language learning. As I´m finalizing my doctoral coursework, I am now in the process of narrowing down a topic that by year's end will be the basis of my dissertation. My hopes are that this "second round" at CCK09 (previously CCK08) will shed more light on the practicality of the theoretical concepts being covered. September 16, 2009

CCK09 - MOOC
About a year ago, the CCK08 course was labeled as a massive open online course (MOOC) by some. As people prepare for CCK09 in September, I wonder if it'll be more or less "massive" than last year. And what makes a course "massive"? How many participants need to sign up or participate that warrants a name like MOOC?

What's more important is the course design in that there are many entry points to choose from as an active participant. The level of participation can vary as well, that is it's open as each person can decide how much time to invest. Except for a few credit-seeking students, the only thing that resembles a "course" really is the fact there are beginning and ending dates. Actually, a MOOC is more like an open, online workshop, and this year it appears that it might even resemble various workshops in that various online conferences are planned to be implemented. Thus, a "MOOC" ends up becoming a different thing for different people which bears the question, Is there a more accurate name for this type of learning experience?

Other interesting notions that come to mind in getting started with CCK09:
September 16, 2009

CCK09 - PLN
In getting geared up for the next CCK09 course on connectivism and connected knowledge, I plan to use primarily blogs as a means for exchanging ideas. My hope is to find a variety of interesting blogs that share common and interesting perspectives that for me are more likely to extend beyond the course itself. There will also be a Moodle site for the course where many discussions take place, so I may "dip in" there from time-to-time as well. There also is a course wiki and a Facebook group where the former is definely useful whereas the latter not so much as far as my own PLN goes.

I also will be feeding my blog to my twitter and friendfeed but am not sure really how helpful these two will be yet. Time will tell.

Oh, and I will use NetVibes as my main aggregator as well as the The Daily in order to attempt to organize the huge amounts of information that this type of course generates.

Well, this is what I have in mind at this point.

Here is how someone else plans to develop their PLN for the upcoming course. September 16, 2009

CCK09 Getting Started
I'm browsing the early course materials. Last year I was a "lurker", subscribed to CCK08 The Daily, but just reading it at times, and never contributing. This year I'd like to actually try to develop myself a bit by doing both reading and reflecting.

I admit I'm a little vague on what exactly Connectivism is. If it's so simple, why does it take so many words to explain? And the words don't always make sense to me. For instance, from What Connectivism Is:
And 'meaning' is a property of language and logic, connoting referential and representational properties of physical symbol systems. Such systems are epiphenomena of (some) networks, and not descriptive of or essential to these networks.
Nothing's firing in my brain. Maybe it's too late at night right now, or maybe I'm at a different (more distant) starting point than the intended audience for this Downes essay. I've worked in education for almost 10 years now, and I think deeply (at least, my version of "deeply") about it often. But there's something I'm not getting here.

Why do I care? I read plenty of things online that don't make sense. Why stop at connectivism and mull it over? ... Because I've been reading OLDaily for 2 years now and have developed some trust in Stephen Downes, so I really think there's gotta be something here. So I stop. And mull. And I have some trust that it will come to me soon. (and based on what I've read about connectivism so far, I wonder if trusting that some understanding "will come to me" is missing the point of connectivism?)

The part that *did* resonate for me from "What Connectivism Is" was near the end:
And I have also expounded, in slogan form, a basic theory of practice: 'to teach is to model and demonstrate, to learn is to practice and reflect.'

No short-cuts, no secret formulas, so simple it could hardly be called a theory. Not very original either. That, too, is not my fault. That's how people teach and learn, in my view.

Which means that a lot of the rest of it (yes, including 'making meaning') is either (a) flim-flammery, or (more commonly) (b) directed toward something other than teaching and learning. Like, say power and control.
That last paragraph is compelling. That makes me want to stay here a bit, and maybe do a little more than just lurking this year.

Getting started with CCK09
Last year I planned to participate in CCK08 – Connectivism and Connective Knowledge’2008 – “a rather large online course” organised by George Siemens and Stephen Downes. The Iceberg of new learning enviroments: CCK09 has just started

The Connectivism and Connective Knowledge Course has just started and I´m excited and overwhelmed at the same time. It´s only participants introducing themselves so far, but we can all see the level is  high, with lots of people from last year coming back for more. A unique chance to learn, share questions and try to answer them making the effort to view things from a different angle or… through different networks, right? I already have the vibrant feeling of being in front of the tip of an iceberg of immense dimensions.

When I was in third grade my teacher gave us a poem about a kid and a horse by Antonio Machado. It made me shiver and I let my imagination flow with it. The teacher, when she saw me “daydreaming”, came to me and said “Don´t daydream with the poem. Just tell me what the author is trying to tell us through this poem”. Somehow that sounded twistedly simple and I wasn´t going to be content, but I had to deal with many, many teachers after that who thought that way and didn´t know better.

Spain in particular is a country where students rarely raise their hands to ask questions, at least that´s the way it was some years ago and I hope it´s true that some things are changing. That´s not only through primary and secondary school but through college as well. All through college I had to struggle with the feeling that it was awkward to ask the teacher questions, or just to interrupt him to say I didn´t understand. I was surprised, shocked even when I saw how natural that is in the United States, how natural the dialogue between teacher and students.

So being part of a new learning enviroment (can we say “ecosystem”?) is pretty much a dream come true. If I can keep up with it and manage to take time “from under the stones” (Spanish idiom :) to live the experience to the fullest, then I´ll be diving around the iceberg.

This is George Siemens saying hi to all of us and explaining why he wants to do this again.

What is Connectivism? Week 1: CCK09
Reading George Siemens' handout for Week 1 asking 'What is Connectivism?'

This is a good overview putting the aspects of Connectivism in terms of other learning theories. Maybe there is more to it than I initially thought! He models this on Mergel’s emphasis on Ertmer’s and Newby’s “five definitive questions to distinguish learning theory”. The original paper by Ertmer and Newby is also available as a PDF (Behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism: comparing critical features from an instructional design perspective. Performance Improvement Quarterly 1993;6(4):50-72). The two additional features suggested by Ertmer and Newby on Schunk's original list of five were about instructional design in particular and it may be interesting to expand Siemen's list to include these. After all why exclude the instructional design aspect? CCK09 has undergone a process of instructional design.

Also I think it should include social learning theories in the comparisonsuch as 'communities of practice' which also talks of the learning that takes place in the connections between individuals and the knowledge that exists outside the individual. September 16, 2009

Origins of Connectivism and review of CCK08 (#CCK09)
Starting CCK09 course having caught the first part of the elluminate session last night.

Just listened to George Siemens talking about the origins of Connectivism in the dichotomy between his traditional teaching of students in a learning environment and his own personal CPD conducted in a more open and free way. In early 2000 he used blogs and other tools that would later be called 'social media'. He believes that learning is fundamentally 'networked' through contacts between people. He asks the questions "what could education be ... how can we change our teaching to reflect the reality [of connected learning]"?

http://www.youtube.com/user/gregaloha#play/user/209BAC7DAACFEDBC

In 2008 he and Stephen Downes launched an online course in 'Connectivism and Connected Knowledge' CCK08 which was designed to teach about Connectivism as a theory using the tools and activities of Connectivism as the mode of learning. This is quite a handy way of teaching learning theories which would otherwise be hopelessly abstract. The course was well received and they were encouraged to run it again as CCK09.

The tutors created a loose structure based on reading lists via email and Moodle, suggested tagging to pull together contributions, and provided a rhythm to the course. The students demonstrated great creativity in their use of emerging technologies to further explore the course content.

I am having difficulty seeing what is new here in terms of learning theory. People have always learned from each other through connections between peers. What is different is the number and asynchronous availability of these connections in the Internet era. Does this level of 'connectiveness' qualify as something different? Could it just be a tool that makes education more accessible and convenient?

And so does CCK09 …
What does? Begins, I mean. I enrolled to CCK09’s Moodle where there were about 50 persons already registered.Nice to see that also this time, it seems that almost whole globe is being represented. Response to “What is the unique idea in connectivism”
In his essay, “What is the unique idea in connectivism,” George Siemens discusses the differences between connectivism and constructivism arising after a twitter post asking, “when a constructivist constructs knowledge, where does it reside physically/biologically?” It seems to me that in distinguishing connectivism from constructivism, Siemens has answered his own question. If knowledge is something [...] September 16, 2009

Introduction
This semester I'm trying to do an online course in connectivism and connective knowledge. I have two goals by doing this. First, I want to learn more about this learning theory. Secondly, I want to experience how it is as a learner to do an online course. Through this course I will try to reflect on both goals. September 16, 2009

on being an ID/learner in an open course

So, this is interesting…in the Elluminate session tonight with George Siemens and Stephen Downes to kick of cck09, they mentioned.. last year (cck08) they had 2200 people sign up for this (free) open course! this year (cck09) they have 709 of those, 20 actually registered/paid to take the course for credit and of those 709, about 54 showed up [...] September 16, 2009

Connectivism as one learning mode amongst others

The online course on connectivism and connected knowledge (Edition 2009) started again this week. I participated last year, but mainly as a mega-lurker due to an overload of other projects. This year, I intend to participate more actively, hence this post.
Last year's short introduction gave me a bit of a feel for connectivism as a learning theory, and it got me thinking. How do learning theories relate to each other? Are they mutually exclusive or rather complementary? Last year, I developed a first thought about this, that goes along these lines (and extends the summary that George Siemens wrote for the course).
Well, those are my thoughts for now. Hope that we can further this line of thinking during the CCK09 course. September 16, 2009

My PLE (Personal Learning Environment) for the CCK09 Connectivism Open Online Course
This is my start page, my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my list of aggregated resources for the CCK09 Connectivism open online course. It is a real example of a PLE, Personal Learning Environment. The Daily News: The Daily Moodle LMS: Course: CCK09 Participants: CCK09: Participants Elluminate: CCK09 Live Sessions I think that by using my PLE [...] September 16, 2009

CCK09 – Yes, I am Searching for Content and Not for Bloggers.
Claudia Ceraso posted: Whatever makes a post or blog a gem is that blogger’s ability to express what other people wish they could, but they can’t. Yet. How does all of that networked learning start to happen? I think there is a simple structure: Content first, people second. Claudia, I usually find better content by following Google Blog Search [...] September 16, 2009

Sleepless in Buenos Aires
I´m spending the night reading introductions and differents PLEs from co-learners of the course.
I can´t say anything yet, too much information. I must process. September 16, 2009

getting ready: building my personal learning environment
I liked silvia andreoli 's PLE: http://www.netvibes.com/saandreoli#Connectivism_CCK09

It takes longer than I thought. September 16, 2009

First day: CHAOS!!
Before the course started, I had all under control: "the course is about what I already know...we learn making conections, i know that, we work and learn as a community the same way our brain does, yes, sure, i know..." and all the things I could think to myself to make me feel confortable and save in a traditional save place, like for example: a university classroom -I can raise my hand there and ask, and be clever, or be silent, and listen to no more than 10 students that most of the times will make fake questions (they know the answer) I can just be in the classroon...nobody will bother me-.

Yesterday I listen to the first conference: the counter for people getting in elluminate started growing and growing, I didn´t know were to look, chat, links, siemens & downes´voices. I googled CCK09 during the night, and read.

Today, google alerts of CCK09, blogs, searchs, videos, introduction on moodle, tweets...fortunatly I loosed control: I´m confused. I´m in chaos. September 16, 2009

CCK09 – Initial Thoughts
Connectivism and Connected Knowledge, 2009 begins again. One of the themes that keeps running through my head is the idea of individuals in this structure of sense-making. In traditional, and constructivist classes, the individual is very connected to a class as a social construct, there’s an emotional bonding that occurs with people going through the [...] September 16, 2009

CCK09: Spring in the Air … and air in my tyres
Last year I was delighted to be involved in CCK08. Without being too dramatic the course transformed my life! At the time I was working from home thinking about how someone with a fascination for learning might develop in rural Australia. Bandwidth at Mongarlowe is not great but at least I have access to satellite connectivity. [...] September 16, 2009
