Discussion Posts

Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here.

, Week Six General Discussion
by Ken Anderson.  I almost forgot what the topic was supposed to be for this week: Using PLE/Ns effectively: skills, mindsets, and critical literacies Skills and critical literacies I sorta get.  These can be measured (I think) although I am not so sure that a literacy in lolcats is really necessary.  The mindset issue is more subjective, I think.  George has this to say:   "Being literate requires technical skills, conceptual mindsets, as well as an attitude of tolerance of .... New media literacy
, Week Six General Discussion
by Vilimaka Foliaki.  I found Howard Rheingold's ideas about new media literacy very empowering. His ideas remind me of Ira Shor's ideas on critical literacy. I've just (half) finished a blog post on what I've learnt about Rheingold's ideas. [Link] 2010-10-19T11:50:04

Are there challenges to learning on online networks?
, Week Six General Discussion
by Rita Kop.  In my latest blog post I highlight some challenges to learning on online networks. They include level of autonomy, power relations on networks, and critical literacies required to participate in such a learning environment. What is you experience as a learner, and what do you think would be the major challenges for people to feel comfortable learning [Link] 2010-10-18T13:44:09

Motivated to Tweet (Jim Stauffer), connectJim
I couldn’t get motivated to investigate all the hype about Twitter until yesterday. Open Access week at Athabasca University featured topics relevant to PLENK; and I suddenly had the urge to spread the word. Skype was too limited – only a handful of contacts. It’s not really a topic for discussion forums. Ah well, perhaps the time had come to put aside my uncritical prejudice against the silly name and see if Twitter would deliver. Tweeted my first tonight. I’m xb7r.This led me to .... [Link] 2010-10-20T04:13:00

, PLE's, networks, knowledge & me
Presented for your consideration EXPERIMENT No. 3 In Which I Learn to Love by Tweeting Madly "Zak greets me at his lab near the Claremont campus, a three-bedroom house being converted into a spacious new lab. To escape the hammering, yammering workers, he escorts me upstairs to a study where a nurse awaits. She compliments me on my veins and draws blood. Then she and Zak leave me alone. I pull up TweetDeck on my laptop and get to work. The question is simple: Will social networking .... [Link] 2010-10-19T11:51:00

PLE Assessment (Didier), Learning PLENK
I have been trying to make my own sense of the conversations last week about PLE and assessment.  With a topic like that we could probably discuss until the end of time and never really get to a clear resolution...  I am coming from the perspective of the world of business & research, and there too, the dynamic is the same.So there isn't much I can really contribute on how to assess (or measure) a person's learning and whether it should be solely driven by the .... How do I know I am making progress? (Didier), Learning PLENK
I have tried to reflect on the ways that I know I am making progress in my research and in my learning, using the format that Stephen came up with during last Friday's conversation. What I found interesting is that most of what I have come up with is about how I know that I have achieved something, when the learning is integrated and regurgitated in some way.  The only assessment that I have about my progress is a feeling of confusion, mixed with interest and some hint of insights .... week 6: practice in #plenk2010
morgan, Morgan's Log
The PLENK2010 readings this week point towards critical literacies and semiotics (skills as languages), and the challenge is that the facilitiators are providing less guidance by way of reading of how to connect the ideas to practices. That is left to us. I say yay. Hooray. Huzzah. Downes in LOLcats take 2 – about Learning [...] [Link] 2010-10-19T13:10:44

New media literacy: what is it?
Vilimaka on cruiselyna, Cruiselyna's Blog
I’m indeed very glad that, after a couple of days of indecision of my involvement with the #PLENK2010, I’ve made good progress with some of this week’s materials. In particular, I’m glad that I’ve learnt two new ideas. First, I’m happy that I’ve learnt about the idea of media literacy. Second, I’m also glad to [...] [Link] 2010-10-19T11:09:54

Cybernetics feedback loops and education (Larry Cuffe), Thoughts in Transit
Arising from PLENK2010 there was a discussion on management cybernetics in the context of teaching. There are a couple of interesting notions arising here. The first overarching (there I’ve used it that means I’m an educationalist not just a teacher) idea is to view educational systems as a system of feedback loops and control mechanisms. For me this is an interesting perspective as it makes me think about signal paths and time constants in an educational setting. This is interesting .... [Link] 2010-09-19T13:31:00

Thinking about PLE's (Larry Cuffe), Thoughts in Transit
This is in response to a post in PLENK2010 claiming that PLE's are a web 2 phenomena. My PLE predates web two. One classic component is the personal library, and of course our network of experts from whom we get topic specific advice. What seems to have changed is the time constants.Book v.s. blog post, a week vs 3 minutes.A second issue is authority. As we become more exposed to polarised data sources, we become more sophisticated at reading the side chanell information which can .... [Link] 2010-09-16T22:06:00
