Reference Management Tools
George Siemens (gsiemens) , September 27, 2010.
Emerging technologies, especially those under the banner of social media, are generally associated informal information creation, exchange, and interactions. Blogs - initially dismissed by journalists for diary-like informal posting - have since become popular on most news sites. Similarly, the use of for sharing bookmarks has set the stage for the development of social reference management software. This thread explores some of those tools... [Link] [Comment]

Discussion Posts

Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here.

An aside in defense of constructivism
, Week Three General Discussion
by Catherine Lombardozzi.  I found the recorded web chat and blog posts related to constructivism vs connectivism very interesting...  George suggests that perhaps someone must die in this fight rather than letting the two theories coexist and draw from one another.  Our facilitatores would be appalled that I have described connectivism as a constructivist theory, I am quite sure, so I will stop doing that. I am very interested in hearing more about this debate - I'd love to hear .... [Link] 2010-09-28T15:09:46

¿Un PLE que no es personal?
, Week Three General Discussion
by Claudia Guerrero. [Link] 2010-09-28T12:58:01

Formativ assessment in PLE today and in "next generation of internet"
, Week Three General Discussion
by Niklas Karlsson.  In a post I wrote about the validation of knowledge is a key issue "The most interesting question of PLE/PLN is maybe not about learning!" ( it is not only the summative assessment which is interesting in PLE / PLN, but also how the formative assessment takes place. Very often, I see short positive feedback or "thumbs up", but it is not the form of assessment which I think is .... [Link] 2010-09-28T10:43:28

The Next Web Will Be a Jump, not a Slide
, Week Three General Discussion
by Alan Levine.  I'm eager for this week's discussions and hope it can go beyond naming things. I've read or re-read most of the references on these next or neXt web ideas. Do not get me wrong, these are all the techno topics that excite me-- yet I struggle to see them as being anything but a continuation, a gradient of the web we have been. For something to follow in the sequence of Web 1.0 -- Web 2.0 -- XXXXX I am looking for something that is an evolutionary leap, a .... [Link] 2010-09-28T08:02:28

Emerging Technology Trends - How to Aggregate Tweets
, Week Three General Discussion
by Gus Goncalves.  This week are talking about "Emerging Technology Trends". We also talk about the xWeb. The xWeb is about "read, write, and collaborate." With Twitter, you can read and write, but it is hard to collaborate. You can use hashtags such as #PLENK2010, but we need another layer of "collaborate" to make it even better. There is a new service out, called "Curated.By". It allows users to aggregate different conversations/discussions. The main site is at [Link] 2010-09-28T02:29:48

MOOC ( Massive Open Online Courses) (Mohsen Saadatmand), VIRTUAL PRESENCE and NETWORKED COLLABORATION
Started two weeks ago, I am participating in a massive online course: #PLENK2010: Personal Learning Environments, Networks, and Knowledge sponsored and organized by the Technology Enhanced Knowledge Research Institute (TEKRI) at Athabasca University. Kate Ray has done a terrific job illustrating and explaining Web 3.0 and the Semantic Web in her new documentary. She interviews Tim Berners-Lee, Clay Shirky, Chris Dixon, David Weinberger, Nova Spivack, Jason Shellen, Lee Feigenbaum, John Hebeler, Alon Halevy, David Karger and Abraham Bernstein. If you’re interested in where the Web is headed, and the challenges and opportunities ahead, then you should watch this, [...] [Link] 2010-09-28T09:31:49

Reseach and knowledge production. #PLENK2010
Niklas Karlsson, Learning - thoughts & reflections
Two interesting blog posts arose the question of reseach and knowledge production, #PLENK2010 Research, John Mak and the in Jennys post  #PLENK2010 Research, technology and networks. I´m yet not familiar with the concept Mode 2 "Gibbons and colleagues argued that a new form of knowledge production started emerging from the mid 20th century which is context-driven, problem-focused and interdisciplinary. It involves multidisciplinary teams brought together for .... [Link] 2010-09-28T08:55:00

Some reflections on the course #PLENK2010!
Niklas Karlsson, Learning - thoughts & reflections
Would it be more activity in an open course like PLENK2010 if it had learning objectivs and that the course started with that the praticipants asked themselfs questions. The next step in the course would then be to together rework  this questions and out of that more or less together deside the content in the course. It may have been easier for each participant to set up own goals in the course if they know more about the course objectivs. The course leaders would then plan the course body, ....
Self-perpetuating communities IIona asks in the MOOC forum about self-perpetuating communities. Practising Second Life.  Thanks Tonito for helping me join the PLENK group and find the right meeting room.  (I know it wasn't easy getting me started.) I moved around a bit and got comfortable with the space, but I couldn't sit down.   Ah, well, more practice is needed.   Went on Facebook and told everyone that we got through to the Hagensborg store on the Handi-Dart.  It's an essential service, here.  More friends were posting photos of the .... The use of data to advance learning in a networked environment (Rita), Observations about learning, knowledge and technology
The #PLENK2010 subject of the week is the eXtended web. In my blog post used in the resources of this week, I highlight a number of issues related to this: The use of Intelligent data for PLE development and networked learning, the challenges of an open online networked environment for learning, and access to technology. In this post I would like  to delve a little deeper in the first aspect on how data can be used to 1. enhance people's searches, and 2. on how data can be used by .... PLENK2010 Week 2: Contrasting personal learning with institutional learning, PLEs with LMSs
kristibroom, Learning About Learning
Last week’s conversation around PLEs vs. LMSs is one that is still a bit perplexing to me. I very much look forward to this week’s topic: Understanding the neXt/eXtended Web, but will continue to revisit the PLE and LMS discussion. One of the challenges in fully rationalizing the concepts comes from my background in corporate learning. It feels [...] [Link] 2010-09-27T21:45:48

#plenk2010 So I was reading through this week’s readings (I didn’t bother with the video; the house is very noisy this evening – was it good?) and – as recommended – I had a good old think about where the web might be going in terms of its impact on teaching, learning, and education. I thought about [...] [Link] 2010-09-27T21:21:33
