Connectivism, Constructivism, and PLEs
George Siemens (gsiemens) , September 23, 2010.
For many people, learning theory is the sometimes dry stuff of a graduate-level education course that has little impact on reality. Stephen and I have run CCK08/09 over the last few years and I think I speak for both of us when I state that learning theory is immensely valuable and practical topic of exploration. Our view of how learning happens influence how we choose to teach, how we "control" a classroom, the types of technologies we use, and so on. While the discussion of learning theory may be less than exhilarating at times, the practical application of clarifying "what is learning" can be valuable. For example, Viplav Baxi asks questions about how constructivist and connectivist learning models are reflected in technology. What types of tools are required for social networked learning? How do these tools differ from constructivist learning? We tackle this in more detail in week 7, but it's certainly worth introducing now... [Link] [Comment]

Discussion Posts

Today we introduce the fourth and final type of link to be included in the Daily, discussion list posts. Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here. All course participants can log in and post their own thoughts. Each day's posts will be listed in this Discussion session of the newsletter.

Practical help request (off topic) - Movie Making per Stephen and Dave
, Week Two General Discussion
by Jane Wilde.  Hi fellow PLENKers, Can someone tell me how Stephen and Dave make movies (as seen on youtube) that have a desktop image (with slides or whatever showing) and an embedded moving image of the speaker in one corner. I can make a screen cast (SnapZ, jing etc). I can make a talking head (with photobooth or iMovie). I just don't know how to do both. Help would be appreciated. Personal Learning and the Chickering and Gamson’s Seven Principles of Good Practice
, Week Two General Discussion
by Eduardo Peirano.  The Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education are a popular framework for evaluating teaching in traditional, face-to-face courses. Can we use these 7 Principles to evaluate Personal Learning?? PLE??? Connectivism? [Link] 2010-09-23T15:38:29

Must PLEs be technology enabled to qualify as PLE?
, Week Two General Discussion
by Kate Hayward.  I came into this course a novice needing to learn what a PLE was. I thought that since it was called a personal learning environment, that included everything that I used to learn stuff . . . face to face conversations, paper-delivery systems like books and magazines, etc. But it seems that we're all talking exclusively about connecting via tech tools. So, I'm changing my perspective to think about a PLE as only tech enabled learning and that stuff I do .... [Link] 2010-09-23T14:10:18

How important is communication in a networked environment?
, Week Two General Discussion
by Rita Kop.  It is clear from this forum, and the research literature, that communication is a difficult issue on a discussion board, but also by using media such as blogs and wikis. See my blog post here for some research on the problems and findings related to level of self-direction influencing the use of discussion forums on LMSs. My own research also shows that there is a bit of a one-way communication using blogs as comments not often move further than some congratulatory remarks .... [Link] 2010-09-23T12:47:49

Scaffolds and helpful hints for course
, Week Two General Discussion
by Susan O'Grady.   I thought it may be helpful to create a repository for any shortcuts, great tools, resources, navigation hints etc. for those new to MOOCs which can be contributed by participants. I've gleaned some great hints by some participants already but they're scattered around the various discussions and may not be discovered by many. Hint 1: My first offering is a website which I've just posted to a discussion 'somewhere'. Some people were having .... [Link] 2010-09-23T12:12:55

Much of the discussion in the first week of the #PLENK2010 course was devoted to the (often quite subtle) distinctions between the Personal Learning Environment and the Personal Learning Network which it supports (and which is itself part of the personal environment). But there is also some (deliberate?) ambiguity within each of the PLE(orN) concepts [...] [Link] 2010-09-24T06:46:40

I’d like to see Conviviality Corners’  suggestion of  Where Good Ideas Come From?  TED Talk and raise him When Ideas Have Sex TED Talk. But really I think Glen has the better TED Talk recommendation. Connectivism vs Constructivism?
, Stephen's Web ~ OLDaily
Graham Attwell, Pontygysgu, September 23, 2010. More traditional educators and theorists have long wondered what the difference is beween constructivism and connectivism. Today we have two posts - and a cluster of discussion from PLENK2010 - addressing this issue. Graham Attwell takes on the issue from the perspective of a Sir John Daniel talk where he says "social connectivism trumps constructivism for third world child learning." I wonder whether that was a typo or mis-statement, .... [Link] 2010-09-23T14:16:40

Zotero is my all time favorite and it is the one reason I continue to use the Firefox browser, otherwise I now use Chrome for everything else. Years ago, doing my MA, I used EndNote and got completely fed up with constant and expensive updates and a crappy user experience. I used Zotero exclusively for my doctoral program and subsequent writing. I also now use the Zotero on line groups functions to coordinate resources for various classes that I teach.
