Concept Mapping
Stephen Downes (Downes) , September 22, 2010.
We've had an interesting side-discussion about the concept-mapping exercise assigned in the introduction to this week's activities. Many people interpreted the directive as contrary to the spirit of a connectivist course, where people are expected to select their own activities. Other people had comments about concept mapping itself.

You are of course free to choose your own activities. But there is a reason behind the directive. There is a significant overlap between concept mapping and connectivism. Both depict a domain of knowledge as consisting of, and being represented as, a network of related concepts. The concept map is a visual representation of this network. And not only that, a concept map represents the design of a PLE in that domain.

This post brings you up to date on concept maps. It provides some examples, states clearly what you can do with concept maps, and links you to some popular tools. [Link] [Comment]

Discussion Posts

Today we introduce the fourth and final type of link to be included in the Daily, discussion list posts. Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here. All course participants can log in and post their own thoughts. Each day's posts will be listed in this Discussion session of the newsletter.

Personal Learning Environment and LMS in a business setting
, Week Two General Discussion
by Chris Saeger.  The conversations and papers this week are primarily in the edcuation environment. While there is overlap I wonder if anyone would like to engage in discussion about formal (LMS) and informal Learning including PLE centered learning. That is my context. In my own organization we are slowly building some acceptance. We do have some internal sites with file sharing and forums as well as an LMS that supports formal training. Here are a couple of interrelated starter .... [Link] 2010-09-21T21:52:41

List of software for mind-mapping and concept-mapping
, Week Two General Discussion
by Sean FitzGerald.  Chris' Concept Mapping thread is getting pretty long and unwieldy, so I thought I'd start one just for people to list links to software.I found this great long list of free software here - you're feeling really adventurous you could join us in Second Life and create a 3D map (it can be dynamic and move too, if you want) - http://plenk2010insl.wikispaces..... Tips for subscribing to the forums and managing the flow
, Week Two General Discussion
by Sean FitzGerald.   I'm not a huge fan of the forums, and I'm trying to build my PLE & PLN on the open web focussed on my blog - and Twitter - - but there are some select discussion threads here I like to follow. This is what I've discovered during my explorations...1) If you choose to subscribe to a forum using the built-in subscription feature you will be sent email alerts of all posts from all .... Knowledge Soup for CMaps?
, Week Two General Discussion
by JG Chesney.  Has a Knowledge Soup been created for the PLENK2010 CMaps? I couldn't find a soup that appeared to be related to PLENK2010 to join, but I may not have seen it. I would think it is best created by the administrators so that we have one place for our concept maps done in CMap, but am also happy to create one for the group if the administrators aren't interested in doing so? What I've learned/done so far
, Week Two General Discussion
by Kai Peters.  I've found the ride fascinating and of course, pleasantly anarchic which I think is because that is my natural state and because the MOOC tends to have many highways and bi-ways. I've learned that there are so many tools out there, many of which I had never heard of that I've had a look at - thanks to the maps/lists/causal diagrammes and such like. Some seem super. Others seem ephemeral and I expect that they will be integrated into the category killers .... [Link] 2010-09-21T14:52:17

Institutional Policies and Privacy Issues
, Week Two General Discussion
by Lynn Zimmerman.  The articles and posts I have read so far offer good comparisons and contrasts of LMSs and PLEs. However, one issue I have not seen addressed is an institutional issue - student privacy and confidentiality. By using an LMS, I am relatively certain that my students' work and information is contained and that no one outside the institution can access it without permission. For those of you who do not teach at a public institution, this may not seem like an important .... [Link] 2010-09-21T13:22:27

PLE as Pied-à-terre
, PLE's, networks, knowledge & me
My picture of the cave painting as a learning environment has me thinking about PLEs in other times and places. Driving to work yesterday I heard this story on NPR. It caused me to think about alternate ideas of a personal learning environment and the importance of the physical world that supports learning. What is your physical learning environment like? How does it support your learning? My own is pretty mobile, have netbook will travel, but I do tend to settle in a comfy chair. .... [Link] 2010-09-21T20:26:07

#PLENK2010 Blog Stats (Veronica Baig), Loose Ends
This post has nothing to do with the topic for this week in PLENK 2010, but is a reflection on the fact that I have just discovered the Stats function on blogger--it's fairly new; I've been aware of it in only the last few weeks, and I hadn't had time to explore it. It keeps track of the "hits" on a blog. So while it may seem from the comments that only a few people are reading our blogs, that isn't so. While only 2 people have left comments on this blog, here are the stats .... [Link] 2010-09-21T21:32:00

#PLENK2010 (V): Aprendizaje Personal vs. Institucional, algunas ideas. (Eva Cisma), ELEopositando
Soy parcialmente .... [Link] 2010-09-21T23:56:00

The Books You Read--PLENK2010 (Technology Tools for Teachers), Wright Personal Learning Environment
Someone once said that "You are the same today as you will be in five years except for two things, the people you meet and the books you read." I have found that my PLE includes reading books as well as many blogs. What I find most interesting is being able to meet new people through my PLE and learning what they read and write. There have been so many times that I have been inspired by reading the books/blogs that have been recommended.Would you be willing to share a few thoughts about .... [Link] 2010-09-21T21:50:00

Open versus Closed
Theresa G, Grand Rounds
The focus of the learning this week is on PLE, which are considered “open” and Learning Management Systems (LMS) which are considered “closed.” Examples of LMS include Blackboard, Moodle and other content delivery resources.  They are considered “closed” because someone (a teacher) controls the content and the activities, unlike a PLE in which the learner personalizes their learning using the tools and content that suits them.I hadn’t really thought of LMS as being closed .... PLE’s vs LMS’s: Yes, but not yet?
Wayne, Wayne's PLENK2010 Blog
If I were to design a new online program today I would choose to focus on PLE’s and social networking tools as the basis of delivery and practice. The question of time (Guillaume Janssen), knowledge remix
Yes indeed, I found this first week of the #PLENK2010 MOOC totally overwhelming as this is really my first experience of such an environment.  Moodle has taken a life of its own, blog posts are mushrooming left right and centre, the "Dailys" are piling up in my inbox, and then there's Twitter and a plethora of side discussions I am probably not aware of.  I feel swamped because everything is interesting.  The expertise and experience of the participants, the quality of the .... PLENK2010 and the QEP (Art Appreciation ALB), Art Appreciation ALB
I fear that many of my students will have similar problems to the ones that I am having.  I never want my students to feel overwhelmed or left out.  I never want to spend half of my semester teaching students about concepts, applications, and theories dealing with technology rather than the subject matter of my course.  I never want a student to miss assignments due to technological glitches, and I hate being in a position where a student is lying to me about technological .... Mapping my PLE/PLN for PLENK2010
Barbara Fillip, Que sais-je?
I started out mapping out all the tools and doing a real diagram but that's like trying to understand how my brain works and I don't care that much about the details.  The point of the diagram above is that most of the annoyances I encounter with my PLE/PLN have to do with the bipolar nature of the beast.  There's "WORK", which is quite interesting, but constrained by "this is a government computer" types of issues, and there are PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL" interests beyond ....
