PLENK 2010 Feeds and Archives

We now have 181 feeds contributing content to PLENK 2010 (this is a new record for MOOCs). You can view these on the Feed List Page. Note: if you have recently submitted a feed and haven't seen it yet, this is because it is still awaiting approval. The course administrators review each feed submission to make sure the RSS harvest URLs are correct. If you have not yet submitted your RSS feed, you can do so here.

Did you miss some of the earlier issues of the newsletter? This is the 7th issue published thus far. If you would like to view archived issues, visit the Newsletter Archive Page and look in the September, 2010, column (it's worth noting that the archives page contains newsletters from the Summer's Critical Literacies course, as well as CCK08 and CCK09).

Week 1 Discussions

Have you visited the Week 1 Discussions page yet? George Siemens is leading a long thread on the nature of PLEs and PLNs. Ken Anderson has opened a thread on the recent EDUCAUSE article on PLEs. And Emma Stobel has raised the question of competency levels for building and managing PLEs.

PLE/PLN Research Projects

Four separate research projects are being conducted in the PLENK 2010 course: 1) The NRC PLE Project research, conducted by Helene Fournier and Rita Kop, 2) Wendy Drexler and Chris Sessums will also invite you to participate in research on Personal Learning Environments and Personal Learning Networks and you will find an invitation to participate in their surveys in the Daily, 3) Dave Cormier and George Siemens carry out research in Massive Open Online courses but will not ask you to fill out surveys, as they will be observers on the learning environment, and 4) Sui Fai John Mak will invite you to participate in his own research into the design and delivery of MOOCs. A separate space appears on the PLENK2010 wiki for various research activities currently underway; some activities will be private while others will be accessible to course participants and facilitators alike. Keep checking the PLENK2010 wiki for updates!

More on the Special Interest Group (S.I.G.) in PLE and PLN research

People engaged or interested in research in Personal Learning Environments and Personal Learning Networks are invited to join in discussion as part of a Special Interest Group on the subject. A discussion thread has already started here. This is meant to be a place for exchanging, reflecting, and sharing on topics related to research on PLEs and PLNs. The conversation will evolve as one or several threads-as mentioned here in the general discussion. Hope you will check out the SIG for yourself!

Facilitator Posts

Here we introduce another element of the daily newsletter, the posts contributed by course facilitators. Each day, some or all of the four of us (George Siemens, Stephen Downes, Rita Kop and Dave Cormier) will contribute a post to highlight a resource, draw out some discussion, or make a point.

To view the entire blog post, click on the title of the post, and you'll be taken to the blog post itself. Alternatively, click on [Link] to proceed to the post without your click being counted.

Just like watching football
George Siemens (gsiemens)
Some reflections on the live session yesterday - I (George) missed the session due to a last minute schedule change :( - so it's nice to have this quick summary before I dive into the recording. This week is a basic foundation week, an attempt to give PLE/Ns some type of description/shape. There is a good discussion in this Moodle forum on the similarities/distinctions. In my view, a PLE is not something that you can readily point to and say "here it is". I see PLE's as an ecology, a space in which learning occurs. It's like trying to describe water to a fish or air to a person.

A PLE can include a suite of tools (i.e. the classic Wilson diagram), but the tools are constantly changing. In 2000, my main tool was a blog and RSS reader. Now, it's a mess of different tools. But the concept of a PLE remains unchanged for me. A tool-centric PLE approach will not provide a long term view fo research or even implementation. In order to define a PLE, one has to enter a state of recursiveness between the self/learning/ecology. It's quite hard to do. It's much easier to talk about the *impact* of PLEs - i.e. the learner has greater control, it's distributed, and so on. The effects are far easier to detail than defining the actual PLE. A PLN, in contrast, has more form and structure - you can point to it and say "these 206 people and these data sources are my PLN. I But that's only one view out of 1300 - express your opinions on you blog or moodle forum...don't forget the PLENK2010 tag! Stefanie Panke, [Link] September 15, 2010

Course Moodle Discussion Forums

You might find it helpful to bookmark the above link for future reference. It's the link to moodle discussions in the course. Each week will have a variety of different discussion topics - ones that we create to kick off the conversation...and ones that you create to explore aspects of the topic that you find relevant. , [Link] September 15, 2010

Recording: Wednesday Session
George Siemens (gsiemens)
The recording from yesterday's discussion has now been posted. Live discussions are held twice weekly: Wednesday and Friday. We have global participation in this course, so undoubtably the live sessions will not always be convenient. All sessions will be recorded. Facilitators, [Link] September 15, 2010

Reflections after the first Elluminate session (Jim Stauffer), connectJim
The “personal” aspect of PLE/N speaks to the fact that it is made up of components I personally use, and that those components will differ to some degree from anyone else’s. The objection that “personal” implied ownership, and therefore control, seems unnecessary to me. There is ownership in the sense that I select the environment or network components (tools and sources) according to what makes sense and is useful to me rather than chaffing under what’s forced upon me by an .... The PLENK2010 course is underway, and I have completed the recommended readings and reviewed the other resources. This included participation in a live, online discussion today. This is the very first article I have read for my course.  7 things you should know about...Personal Learning Environments.  In this article the author states:PLEs represent a shift away from the model in which students consume information through independent channels such as the library, a textbook, or an LMS, moving instead to a model where students draw connections from a growing matrix of resources that they select and organize. Before our students are able form connections they ....

The Death of the RSS Reader: Another Debate That Needs to End!
, Stephen's Web ~ OLDaily
I spend more time on RSS each day than probably any other tool, except maybe email (sorry Luis). And RSS is at the core of things like the PLENK2010 course. So no, I don't think that RSS is going away, and that's why I appreciate this defense of it. "RSS feed readers will come and go," writes Luis Suarez, "just like with any other Internet (social) tool available out there... However, that's not where our focus should be. Our focus should be on the behaviours; on the task at hand;.... [Link] 2010-09-15T15:25:44

#PLENK2010 (II) (Eva Cisma), ELEopositando
El concepto PLE, Personal Learning Enviroment, surgió a raíz de un artículo publicado en 2005 (no hace tanto de eso). El título: "The VLE of the future" y el apellido del autor: Wilson. [Link] 2010-09-15T20:23:00

September 15 Live Session Reflection
Worlds2See, Personal Learning Environments, Networks and Knowledge
This blog post is my attempt at summarizing and internalizing today's live session.1.  The difference between PLE and PLN is a matter of semantics.  Trying to create a clear differentiation between the two will not assist us in any meaningful way.  The term PLN is intrinsically contradictory.  The idea of having a "personal" network declares ownership.  The only reason that the network becomes personal is that the individual is a small piece of .... Before designing my PLE for PLENK I need to set my clock for it.I don´t have time for PLENK right now but couldn´t stay out, so I decided to go for a little aim (Downes inspired me with his half an hour blog): "My PLENK half an hour of the day".I will choose something to enjoy per day, taking half an hour of my multiple duties to be PLENK-connected. Notes from Dave Cormiers 5 points about PLEs and PLNs (Paul Ellerman), Paul's Learning Blog PLE's are different from and LMS. LMS are course oriented, whereas a PLE is learning orienteated.2. There is a difference between a PLE and a PLN. What the difference is depends on what an indivdiual thinks an environemtn is vs a network.3. PLEs do not need to be supported by institions, but rather the learner owns and controls thier own stuff.4. Ownership and Time are important aspects in using a PLE/PLN ....
