Welcome to Week 2: Video
Short (12 minute) video introduction to week 2. The first half of the presentation focus on participating in the conversation, looking back at last week and looking at upcoming topic areas. The second half of the presentation focus on introducing the articles we're considering this week - Stephen's article on Connective Knowledge and Dave Cormier's article on Rhizomatic Knowledge (both articles and the weekly schedule are on the wiki). Discussions of knowledge can be rather painful. Hopefully we can lay a bit more of a foundation for the rest of the course by considering ways in which knowledge is networked and how that impacts learning.

EC&I 831 and CCK08 - Ouside Looking In
It's interesting reading this comparison between CCK08 and an earlier open online course offered by Alec Couros, Rob Wall and Kyle Lichtenwald. You can see the content of the Couros course on the course wiki.

CCK08 - New Week, New Start, Going On a Diet!
This is the attitude to take! "After the rather ill-advised gorging, this week I know better to resist the temptation and only savour what I enjoy the most. I don't want to feel overwhelmed anymore." The appropriately titled Edusnacks is taking the same approach: "I'm going to limit my interaction to just a sprinkling of readings and a couple of new thoughts each week."

Information and Knowledge Compared
What could be more fun than trying to define knowledge? Well, obviously analyzing the differences between information and knowledge. ACT-KM tackles this topic periodically, and within that forum, few people are more involved than Dave Snowden. A summary of a recent discussion "Firstly let me make it clear that it is not an either/or between a position (i) they are mutually exclusive concepts and (ii) they are a superset/subset one of the other. Some knowledge can be partially represented as information (and reused as such), some cannot." How does this relate to connective and rhizomatic knowledge? We'll tackle that topic during our live Wednesday sessions.

Continuing with Connectivism Course
Let's return briefly to a core assertion we've been making: knowledge is distributed across networks (of people, increasingly aided by technology) and that learning is the act and process of forming and navigating networks. Not all connections are of equal value. Connections that serve to meet our knowledge needs are desirable. It is important to recognize what knowledge we need and how we might fulfill that need. In the process we filter, seek patterns, and experiment with tools and approaches. Or, as Selena states: "In the long run, I (& probably the majority of the other participants) will settle into the sites / tools we find provide the easiest way to access the course material and to network with others on the course."
