Deinstitutionalizing Education
Stephen Downes (Downes) , November 3, 2010.
In this article at Huffington Post I argue we need to question how we manage education altogether. For it is manifest, I believe, that the institution, the form in which we have managed education and society in general, has ultimately come to failure. [Link] [Comment]

noreply@blogger.com (Glen Gatin), Conviviality Corners
The #PLENK in SL cohort met on Tuesday in Conviviality Corners for a brief meeting to discuss a variety of topics. We have ordinarily been meeting immediately after the Elluminate sessions but we wanted to try another time to see if that worked better. The main topic of discussion was the importance of online virtual worlds for a personal learning environment. While no clear consensus was reached in the discussion most of the members agreed that virtual worlds held great potential as critical .... [Link] 2010-11-03T07:14:00

PLENK2010 Information Overload
noreply@blogger.com (Skupik), Skupiktalk
PLENK2010 My son was telling me that some scientists want to genetically modify human beings so that we can see ultraviolet light as bees and other insects do. I immediately saw it would change everything--it would end the world as we know it. "Oh, no. Do we have to?" I asked. I think it is really good for teachers and other adults to go back into an environment where thy are learners. It has been very exciting meeting new people, new ideas, and practising new skills. But it is .... [Link] 2010-11-03T04:27:00

And another reply to the PLENK2010 Moodle Socrates thread - here  attracted by this. Steve, like Chris I am impressed by your questions and Chris, thank you for this evolutionable can of worms. The high value of a (good) question is, that it instantly challenges any mind to think on its own, triggering the will to find a good answer. An Egomind-trap that could produce wonders; The fine art of this method, I feel, is to know, where you can lead/meet those thinking through your&.... [Link] 2010-11-02T19:02:00

The Tyranny of Teaching Content
, Stephen's Web ~ OLDaily
Jenny Mackness, Jenny Connected, November 2, 2010. Good post from the PLENK course responding to the question of how to teach if you're not teaching content. "There is so much information out there, which is developing and changing so fast, that I can't possibly keep up with it, never mind hold it all in my head. The trick is to work out what knowledge/facts I must always have at my finger tips and what I don't need to hold in my head because I can search for the .... [Link] 2010-11-02T06:37:57

Socratic questioning - Week 7 in #PLENK2010
Chris Jobling, Fresh and Crispy
Socrates Week 7 in PLENK2010 was concerned with PLE/N tools (What Exists, What is Being Built?): Many of the tools that fit under the PLE/N umbrella have been appropriated by educators from other fields. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it does reflect a sense that educators are not building tools for themselves. The software that we use in this course is a bit of an exception. LATE FOR WEEK 7 #PLENK2010
noreply@blogger.com (Veronica Baig), Loose Ends
Last week seemed to get away from me; in part it was general work pressure, but also because I didn't relate well to the question being asked about creating our own tools. I understand the question only too well because I teach in the asynchronous online environment, and I that is available seems to satisfy the needs of my particular students. Nearly four years ago, I started using blogging technology (I use that term because these are not traditional blogs) with my students (ESL and .... [Link] 2010-11-02T12:28:00

The Way Forward - PLE or LMS
noreply@blogger.com (from pandora), Janus
Is This A Dagger I See Before Me?I question whether the battle of the acronyms need really be as fierce as it's made out to be. Perhaps a productive method of contrasting the two systems is to look at the deficiencies of each and then offer some possible strategies for circumventing any threats to the learner's acquisition of knowledge. I stumbled upon Graham Attwell's presentation which questions the 'ostrich' reaction of educational institutions to the whole concept .... [Link] 2010-09-28T14:18:00
