Week 8: PLE/Ns and Managing Personal Knowledge

Since early 2000, new tools and technologies have given individuals greater control over information creation and sharing. Under the banner of web 2.0 and social media, these technologies have greatly increased information overload (see How Much Information report). This week we'll look at emerging models of managing personal information and knowledge. We'll look at both tools and models of PKM..and, through discussions, consider skills required, relationship between PLE/Ns and PKM, as well as critical perspectives.

Readings

- Personal Knowledge Management, Wikipedia
- How Much Information, Roger Bohn
- A weblog case of personal knowledge management, Lilia Efimova (.pdf)
- Personal Knowledge Management and Wisdom, Harold Jarche
- Information Overload and PKM, Jason Frand and Aura Lippincott

Live Sessions

Wednesday:

Guest Speaker: Harold Jarche
Location: Elluminate
Time:8:00 p.m. Moscow; 5:00 p.m. London; 12 noon New York; 9:00 a.m. Los Angeles; midnight Thursday Beijing. Conversions to different time zones

Friday:

Live Session: Facilitator's discussion
Location: Elluminate
Time:8:00 p.m. Moscow; 5:00 p.m. London; 12 noon New York; 9:00 a.m. Los Angeles; midnight Saturday Beijing. Conversions to different time zones

Activities for this week:

After reviewing the readings this week, consider how you manage information. In the process, detail how you define information and knowledge. Do you have a structured PKM model? Or do you rely on less formal system? Consider diagramming how your PKM relates to your PLE/N and sharing in the discussion forum...

by Linn Gustavsson.  I love using tools like Todaysmeet Testmoz.com Micropoll Shared Google Docs Google Forms Comment fields of blogs Why? STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN IN to an account or download. Just go to the url. The ultimate tool is for example Todaysmeet where no person needs an account, you just meet there. Connecting networks to networks of networks (long, sorry!)
, Week Seven General Discussion
by Nicola Avery.   Hi everyone. I am writing this following reading elearnspace post today about tutor/mentor connections. This is an outline of how far I have got with trying to help a colleague who I was recently working with - achieve her vision of creating a network for women of initially a particular faith, in the UK. I have suggested that rather than focus on a website/portal because there are lots already - instead connect to other networks - there are several specialist networks .... [Link] 2010-10-29T13:44:00

Self assessment in PLENK2010 by Google Analytics

How to use Google Analytics data for self assessment? It is not the number of total visits to your blog that counts is it? Is it the Visitors Loyalty-data? Or?Today I started using the widget LinkWithin for my blogposts. Thanks to Charlotta. I ask myself, how  Stephen Downes has managed such a busy week. I, as tiny data from slide no. 14, enjoyed  his pictures of  Monterrey. The place of content in teaching and learning
, Stephen's Web ~ OLDaily
Jenny Macness, Jenny Connected, October 29, 2010. Reflecting on Maria Anderson's presentation in PLENK2010, Jenny Macness writes, " I wonder whether content is the starting point (I think Maria suggested that learners  need some content to base their learning on – or words to that effect) or whether there is an ‘engaging the learner' stage, a ‘learning how to learn' stage,  which precedes or circumvents content  – just as Matthias and ....
