Growing Success: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting in Ontario Schools
Stephen Downes (Downes) , October 13, 2010.
This reference was cited in the Week 5 Discussion by Ken Anderson . The 168 page PDF defines seven fundamental principles stating that assessments...
• are fair, transparent, and equitable;
• support all students;
• relate to the curriculum, interests, learning styles and preferences;
• are communicated clearly;
• are ongoing and varied in nature;
• provide ongoing descriptive feedback;
• develop students' self-assessment skills.

Resonance and evaluation
, Week Five General Discussion
by Ken Anderson.  What is this thing called resonance?  I've seen it mentioned in a few posts here and there, but I don't have a good idea on what it means. Wikipedia talks about resonance as involving oscillation of a system, where the oscillation is of higher amplitude at certain frequencies than at others. Should I be oscillating? Is this how resonance is being used here? Is resonance a form of evaluation?  If I oscillate largely when reading something, does this mean it is .... [Link] 2010-10-12T13:38:29

The vegetarian roots of connectivism? #plenk2010

Note the analogy of plant roots and the internet. A connectivist analog?   Stefano Mancuso: The roots of plant intelligence "Plants behave in some oddly intelligent ways: fighting predators, maximizing food opportunities ... But can we think of them as actually having a form of intelligence of their own? Italian botanist Stefano Mancuso presents intriguing evidence." Friendfeed groups - a social network for PLENK2010?
Chris Jobling, Fresh and Crispy
In response to George Siemens' Week 4 discussion topic "Is it the topic or the period in the course?", Vahid Masrour said "I have a suggestion... posted in my blog [Where is MOOC's social network?"], but in a nutshell, i think the MOOC should provide better+easier means to 'cluster' for the participants. A Facebook-like profile if you will." In one of the comments to Vahid's post, Rita [Link] 2010-10-12T19:20:00

PLENK2010 - It's a Marathon not a Sprint!
Chris Jobling, Fresh and Crispy
Losing Contact! The faciltators said we couldn't possibly read everything, but I feel like I've not read anything from Weeks 4 and 5. As you can see there's a huge amount of discussion going on in the Week 4 forum and it's already building up in Week 5 which has just started. And that's not even counting the twitter feed and The Daily. I feel like a marathon runner who went too fast for [Link] 2010-10-12T17:06:00

PLENK2010: The MOOC buffet and personal recipes
ctscho, Thinking Out Loud
In which I avoid the phrase “running aMOOC,” address the personal, and serve hotdish. How do you approach a party where you know few people, if any? Chat with anyone? Loiter near the potted plants? Personal Learning Environments: A Report from the Field #plenk2010
morgan, Morgan's Log
I finally got the text of my Great Plains Alliance for Computers and Writing presentation onto the wiki at Personal Learning Environments: A Report from the Field. It’s not all there yet – missing a link and the slides – but I want the material available for the GPACW attendees.  I hope it might be useful to [...] [Link] 2010-10-12T11:46:21

Evaluating online happenings
Heli, Heli on Connectivism
We have the Evaluation Week in PLENK2010 and this challenging topic interests me greatly. I scanned the web pages recommended to us. My first astonishment was that a famous guy who’s name I do not remember (never heard) and do not want to write here: he made a survey and asked people (American people) about [...] [Link] 2010-10-12T10:24:11

PLENK10 - On selfishness
Barbara Fillip, Que sais-je?
Cover via AmazonI was on a train for six hours this past weekend, with a book (the physical thing) on hand.  It happened to be The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains, by Nicholas Carr. I can't say that I was doing deep reading because I'm not a regular train traveler and I was slightly distracted by the noise and motion of the train, but sitting in the quiet car, I did manage to read uninterrupted for significant chunks of time. While I was testing my .... Confirming Theories
Downes, Half an Hour
Responding to x28's New Blog.Interesting points. So we have three possible sources of the multiplicity of theories:- belief one’s own learning style is universal- study bias- pressure to publishThis is probably a good case, though it should indeed be supported observationally.How would this be supported observationally? There are two approaches:1. Conduct a study, asking people how they reach their theories, bolstered by redactive accounts of theories proposed in the literature. This .... [Link] 2010-10-12T11:57:00
