Week 5 - Evaluating Learning in PLE/Ns

During the first four weeks of this course, we have explored PLE/Ns and the theories that support their role in education. This week, we turn our focus to evaluating learning in PLE/Ns.

An often unstated mindset in education is that clear outcomes require a clear, structured learning process. If you've studied instructional design or adult education theory, you're likely familiar the view that learning outcomes, teaching, and evaluation must be aligned. This model works well in universities and colleges where the course model is dominant and the structured teaching and content model integrates well with classroom scheduling, accreditation, and general clock-work university functioning.

Learning, however, is not as mechanistic or structured as the classroom model suggests. Jon Dron suggests that technologies and processes have "hard" and "soft" attributes. That is, structure and constraint can serve a role in the educational process, but when applied to processes that are more "soft" (such as learning), challenges arise. When hard processes dominate in learning, we end up with learning management systems and standardized testing. When soft systems dominate, we end up with chaos and no clear way to ascertain the quality or depth of learning. An effective system of learning is one where hard and soft processes and technologies are balanced in such a way as to reflect the needs of a particular context.

Assessment and learner evaluation presents a similar problem between hard/soft systems: how do we measure what matters...and, to whom does what we measure matter?

Readings for this week:

With this as a backdrop, let's turn to a few readings and resources for this week:

What can't be measured? (short article, but raises questions about how to measure things such as raising children, love, etc.)

Evaluation by Recognition
, Week Five General Discussion
by Stephen Downes.  In various presentations (such as this one http://www.downes.ca/presentation/242 see especially slide 35) I have stated two things about assessment:1. Learning is recognized, not measured - although we have taken to using tests and such as proxies for recognition, ultimately, we are not confident in saying that a person has learned unless someone who is already qualified in the field has observed and attested that the learning has been achieved.2. Recognition is global, .... [Link] 2010-10-10T23:42:26

Does the Digital Classroom Enfeeble the Mind? #plenk2010
, PLE's, networks, knowledge & me
There two paragraphs from this NY Times article by Jaron Lanier sums up my attitude about "theorys" of learning. "The deeper concern, for me, is the philosophy conveyed by a technological design. Some of the top digital designs of the moment, both in school and in the rest of life, embed the underlying message that we understand the brain and its workings. That is false. We don’t know how information is represented in the brain. We don’t know how reason is accomplished .... [Link] 2010-10-10T19:49:00

Value of learning artefacts
noreply@blogger.com (Didier), Learning PLENK
On the Friday conversation of the first week, a formula was drawn to assess the value of an artefact .  The formula was simply an aggregation of the most important variables that should be consider, no more but that is an encouraging start.I think that it is very important to have an evaluation of what is produced.  Without something like that, it is quite difficult to establish a selective mechanism for sorting out the large amount of input.I also think that an evaluation of .... Concept Map: Learning Process
noreply@blogger.com (Didier), Learning PLENK
I wanted to explore how I organise my learning as a process.  One of the main challenge for me is to keep focused:  There are a lot of research / learning that I would like to do and it is easy to get lost.  So I wanted to outline how I would like my learning process to work and then start to think about what PLE system I have or would like to have for that. What I would like from a PLE is first and foremost a way to put together various sources of information, and notes, and .... noreply@blogger.com (Skupik), Skupiktalk
I think every teacher-in-training needs to take a course on how to teach reading and writing because, I contend, that all subject assignments need to be guided reading lessons if the text is written at the Frustration Level of the Students.  Then, too, I think every teacher-in-training needs to take courses in basic special education because possibly one-third of every class may have ADD.  In a time when people with special needs are not excluded from society, children (and adults) ....
