PLE/PLN and learning theories

Sorry about the multiple newsletters today - we set up an automated system, which is a great time-saver, but is unforgiving when we don't have the content in on time...

This week we are discussing PLE/PLNs and Learning Theories.

At first glance, learning theory discussions have all the excitement of watching rocks break down into soil: the process is long and tedious and often seems to produce little value.

So why have we included this topic at this stage in the course??

Theory and practice are iterative and symbiotic. The epistemological, psychological, and social underpinnings of learning theory and tools are helpful in "explicitating" attitudes and assumptions educators bring to their learning and teaching practices. For example, a common statement among educators is that "it's not the technology but the pedagogy that's important". On the surface, this seems like a very sensible statement: which sane educator would argue that tools themselves are more important than intent? In reality, however, technology embodies ideologies. A learning management system significantly dictates the range of pedagogical actions available to an educator. Explicitating (my new favorite word that really doesn't exist) how software programming and technology design decisions influence tool use and perpetuate particular views of learner autonomy, instructor control, and idea diversity is an important starting point for pragmatic action. An LMS is not only "used" by the educator, but in turn uses and shapes the learning experience (go McLuhan? !).

This week will introduce the key learning theories in which PLE/Ns are grounded. Some of the discussion will be a bit philosophical or theoretical, but should serve to more clearly detail the motivations that drive educators to promote PLE/Ns in their teaching practice.

Unfortunately, as you will note in the readings and in the websites we're exploring this week, the state of learning theories is, um, painful and confusing. Literally hundreds of theorists and theories exist and categorizing them into something coherent is a challenging task. This task is compounded by the ways in which theorists are represented: sometimes Piaget is a constructivist. Sometimes he's a cognitivist. Bruner and Bandura suffer a similar multi-theory fate.

With the chaotic state of learning theories as our starting point, let's see if we can't get give PLE/Ns a strong theoretical foundation on which we'll build the balance of the course.

Readings for this week:

Cluster and Focus, Surviving week 4 of a MOOC, Dave Cormier

Review of Elearning Theories, Frameworks, and Models (PDF), Terry Mayes & Sara de Freitas

Learning Theories, a long list from EmTech. Don't read all of this; use this as an index (and never be stumped by someone's reference to a learning theory again).

Learning Theories and Models, another list of learning theories, this one at learning-theories.com

Theory into Practice: Theory Listing - yes, it's another list of theories, this one from Theory Into Practice

Comparing Connectivism with Other Learning Theories, from the Connectivism and Connective Knowledge Course.

Some questions to consider:

- why are there so many learning theories
- is there a 'right' one? How would we know?
- does the PLE and PLN favour any particular learning theory?

Live Sessions this week:

Wednesday

Live discussion in Elluminate - see conversions to different time zones

Friday

Live discussion in Elluminate - see conversions to different time zones

Activities this Week:

This is an important discussion week - we will be making vital connections between:

* PLE/Ns and
* the types of tools, software, and pedagogies that
* reflect connectivist theories of learning, the rhizomatic attributes of knowledge

As with previous weeks in the course, please share your thoughts in the discussion forums and blogs...as well as offer videos/images/artifacts that reflect the relationship between theory and PLE/N

Cluster or clutter?
, Week Four General Discussion
by Dave Ferguson.  I've just read Dave Cormier's post Cluster and Focus: Surviving Week 4 of a MOOC. In it he says that weeks 3 and 4 of a course like this "are the most difficult for students." The newness has worn off (and, he might have added, some of the confusion has faded). People ask themselves "why finish?" and "how do I get the most out of this process?"The advice (steps 3 and 4; steps 1 and 2 will appear some other time, I guess): Pay .... PLE/PLN and organizing learning
, Week Four General Discussion
by Michael Paskevicius.  This week’s topic is probably the most interesting and contentious. How does the fostering of PLE/PLN's for students create and enrich their learning experience? As a professional the creation of a PLN allows me to personalize my inbound and outbound information flows. It needs to be managed however, to ensure I am not inundated with information. In formal education we are trying to mediate students learning of scientific concepts. I believe that learning .... [Link] 2010-10-04T13:03:39

Hi all who responded to my post on the eXtended Web through #PLENK2010. Several of you wondered how a recommender system might work and if it would make your search less rich rather than richer in the end. On the PLENK discussion forum several of you made some suggestions. And yes, you've hit the nail on the head. The problem with recommender systems is that someone puts the algorithm together that decides what is being recommended, and what has priority in the recommendation. What I find .... Constructivism=LMS tool structure, connectionism=PLE tool...
, PLENK2010
Constructivism=LMS tool structure, connectionism=PLE tool structure????? This part of 24 September 2010 - Week 2: Facilitator Discussion indeed raises these many question marks (about 55min into the recording). But at least, I managed to finish going over week 2, two days before the first session of week 4… I might jump over week 3 just to see what happens. Will I fit in the online discussion? # [Link] 2010-10-04T23:45:00
