Concept Mapping

We've had an interesting side-discussion about the concept-mapping exercise assigned in the introduction to this week's activities. Many people interpreted the directive as contrary to the spirit of a connectivist course, where people are expected to select their own activities. Other people had comments about concept mapping itself.

You are of course free to choose your own activities. But there is a reason behind the directive. There is a significant overlap between concept mapping and connectivism. Both depict a domain of knowledge as consisting of, and being represented as, a network of related concepts. The concept map is a visual representation of this network. And not only that, a concept map represents the design of a PLE in that domain.

This post brings you up to date on concept maps. It provides some examples, states clearly what you can do with concept maps, and links you to some popular tools. [Link] [Comment]

Personal Learning Environment and LMS in a business setting

What I've learned/done so far

I've learned that there are so many tools out there, many of which I had never heard of that I've had a look at - thanks to the maps/lists/causal diagrammes and such like. Some seem super. Institutional Policies and Privacy Issues

However, one issue I have not seen addressed is an institutional issue - student privacy and confidentiality. By using an LMS, I am relatively certain that my students' work and information is contained and that no one outside the institution can access it without permission. PLE as Pied-à-terre

My picture of the cave painting as a learning environment has me thinking about PLEs in other times and places. Driving to work yesterday I heard this story on NPR. It caused me to think about alternate ideas of a personal learning environment and the importance of the physical world that supports learning. What is your physical learning environment like? The Books You Read--PLENK2010

I fear that many of my students will have similar problems to the ones that I am having.  I never want my students to feel overwhelmed or left out.  I never want to spend half of my semester teaching students about concepts, applications, and theories dealing with technology rather than the subject matter of my course.  I never want a student to miss assignments due to technological glitches, and I hate being in a position where a student is lying to me about technological .... Mapping my PLE/PLN for PLENK2010

I started out mapping out all the tools and doing a real diagram but that's like trying to understand how my brain works and I don't care that much about the details.  The point of the diagram above is that most of the annoyances I encounter with my PLE/PLN have to do with the bipolar nature of the beast.  There's "WORK", which is quite interesting, but constrained by "this is a government computer" types of issues, and there are PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL" interests beyond ....
