Social Networks Adapting Pedagogical Practice
George Siemens (gsiemens) , September 20, 2010.
SNAPP is a neat, simple tool for analyzing discussion forums. It's a simple plugin that works in IE, FF, and Safari. Once installed, login to the moodle forum of your choice in this course and activate the plugin. It provides a useful analysis of frequency of posts and resulting connections/network structure. Discussion Posts

Today we introduce the fourth and final type of link to be included in the Daily, discussion list posts. Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here. All course participants can log in and post their own thoughts. Each day's posts will be listed in this Discussion session of the newsletter.

Learning Plans vs Doing Plans
, Week Two General Discussion
by Stephen Downes.  From Työn ja oppimisen murroksen ihmettelyä I see a reference to the Personal Learning Plan.  (PLP)It makes me want to channel Yoda: "Do or do not. There is no learn. Only do." My personal learning plan (PLP) depends utterly on what I want to do. Or maybe on who I want to be. The main points is, it is not stand-alone. It is derived. Also: "PLN does not or even cannot (or can it?) offer learning strategies." Why not? "Is the plan only a '.... [Link] 2010-09-20T18:01:50

Entities and Relations: Personal or Canonical?
, Week Two General Discussion
by Stephen Downes.  Sparks and Flashes: "Trying to map my PLE was like building a relational database view with no schema. Even more, it was like describing a schema, with no enhanced entity relationship model to inform the process." Yes. This is the reality that is the NRC Plearn project. And yet, "I'm human, and as such, my entities and their relationships change state, function, direction and even swap roles with each other." And "this is a symbolic .... [Link] 2010-09-20T17:57:08

Finding a Voice in a PLN v a Pre-structured Interaction Environment
, Week Two General Discussion
by Wendy McGrath.  One thing that has become obvious to me is that without the multi-directional participation in a emergent network - a personal learning realm is limited to being a"mute island of consumption." The power of the social mind comes alive in the network dialogue.But.., have to have a 'voice' in that dialogue, or you are essentially still on mute. Rather than being a node in that network, you remain, hmm, I don't electron cluster, .... [Link] 2010-09-20T13:28:56

Concept Mapping
, Week Two General Discussion
by Chris Jobling.   I note that in the activities of week two we are asked to "Continue reflecting on the tools and processes that you utilize in learning online. Download CMAP and begin to detail the tools you use in managing your learning. In particular, focus on the concepts that influence your learning process. How important is personal control over your data? How important is a particular set of tools? How would you adjust if one or more of the tools listed disappeared due to .... , Week Two General Discussion
by Ken Anderson.  I noticed that a lot of the readings for this week are blogs.  Somewhere else the question has been raised:  Why blog?  I found the following quote useful for thinking about both the 'Why blog' question and the staged PLE vs. LMS conflict: "To air one's views gratuitously, however, is to imply that the demand for them is brisk, which may not be the case, and which, in any event, may not be relevant to the discussion" (p. 114). I wonder, is .... [Link] 2010-09-20T02:08:07

The Networked Student - My Observations
, Week Two General Discussion
by Gus Goncalves.  My daughter has started her first year at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, a college preparatory school for grades 9-12. Ursuline has a rather aggressive technology program, called Anywhere, Anytime Learning. This program involves a very substantial use of technology, starting with every student being issued a laptop computer. Not only they have access to these computers, but all of their work, communication with teachers, and access to information (via school based systems .... [Link] 2010-09-19T19:21:29

Mapas mentales
, Week Two General Discussion
by jordi jordiguim. .... [Link] 2010-09-20T22:51:33

On the value of artifacts...
, Week Two General Discussion
by George Siemens.  An interesting discussion on the concept map activity that was introduced this week: I started compiling an email to course facilitators about the value of artifacts and having suggested learning activities...but then it seems more sensible to have this discussion in public. Why artifacts? From my experience in learning and in teaching online courses, creating something is an important activity. When .... [Link] 2010-09-20T20:49:19

LMSs and PLEs Effectively evaluating the tools I use
, Week Two General Discussion
by Jane Wilde.  For a moment lets define Learning Management Systems as all in one tools used by Institutions to manage course enrollment, control flow of information, house course content, protect student information, provide a standardized platform about which faculty development activities can be streamlined and student tech help can be provided. We know them: Blackboard, Moodle, Angel... At the extreme these can be come confining straightjackets of inflexibility and frustration. Or .... [Link] 2010-09-20T18:05:25

Learning 'Naturally'?
, Week Two General Discussion
by Stephen Downes.  Learning about Learning writes: "I’m not a natural note-taker, preferring to let ideas swim around in my head. So blogging does not come naturally either." I want to know, what is it to be a 'natural' at this or that? Practice it for 10,000 hours and you'll find yourself pretty natural at it. Learning just is the process of making something that is unfamiliar to oneself become familiar. It involves doing something that is not 'natural&.... [Link] 2010-09-20T18:04:17

Centralised VLE versus a Decentralised Model
gibirger, via פλenK
#PLENK2010 is contrasting personal learning with institutional learning. Since I’m  envolved in both environments this week reading will definitely structure my position. Martin Weller wrote in an article for a new journal , the International Journal of Virtual and Personal Learning Environments (IJVPLE). His piece was entitled ‘The centralisation dilemma in educational IT’. He argued that [...] [Link] 2010-09-20T07:29:30

2010 and the Future Is Here (Learning Curves), PLENK Connect
The web is still relatively young and during this short time, this networked reality of data, information and connections has completed transformed who we are, how we communicate, how we do business and especially how the young develop. In the PBS documentary, "Growing Up Online" we saw that the classic conflicts between teens and their parents was exacerbated by Kam's digital life. Even though his mother had relatively strict control of his web usage, Kam still fit the profile of a .... [Link] 2010-09-21T00:06:00

#PLENK2010 Many teachers, many adults, are horrified by this "textspeak".  However, this particular message was written by Charles C Bombaugh in 1867.   I subscribe to A Word A Day at, and today's email (emanate) brought news of a new display to be presented from November 15 to April 15 at the British Library.  If you teach English or are interested in the language check it out:@font-face { font-family: "Times New Roman";}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div..... [Link] 2010-09-20T21:34:46

More on PLEs and PLNs
Scott B. Johnson, ION_Today
The challenges I'm having in this PLENK2010 course remind me of the feelings I had taking graduate classes that I just didn't get at first. Some of them I subsequently "got." There are issues of scale and responsibility that I find curious.Just what is the fuss over LMS? There are purposes for things. Arguing against the application of course/learning management systems in favor of PLNs or PLEs seems like preferring ice tea over sand bags. They are different things, they apply .... , PLE's, networks, knowledge & me
Can Twitter make you a better leader? Via SmartBrief on Leadership: "Social media can help you grow as a leader by exposing you to other leadership ideas, by helping you improve communication skills and by allowing you to get instant feedback on your ideas." The article gives a very practical example of a personal learning environment in use  #plenk2010 By the way, SmartBrief was mentioned by Robin Good in his article on Real time News ....
