Week 2 - PLEs and LMSs

The discussion in Moodle forums this past week as already entered into week two's topic: PLEs and LMSs. Key questions arise as to the role that PLEs play in relation to structured enterprise-controlled systems (VLEs and LMS). Can PLEs be seen as institutional level software? Do PLEs require dramatic reform of the education system? Must PLEs and LMS be seen as antagonistic to each other? Why can't they just get along?

The readings and discussions this week will explore the relationship between PLE/LMS and potential impact on education and organizational learning.

Readings for this week:

Terry Anderson, PLE's versus LMS: Are PLEs Ready for Prime Time?

Panel Discussion, Open complementing closed - PLE and LMS - why, what for and how?

Wendy Drexler, The networked student model for construction of personal learning environments: Balancing teacher control and student autonomy

Dave Cormier, PLE vs. LMS – disaggregate power, not people

George Siemens, Learning or Management Systems?

Oskar Casquero et al, "Towards an eLearning 2.0 provisioning strategy for universities"

Martin Weller, The Centralization Dilemma (free copy is available by following the link toward the end of the post).

Live Sessions this week:

Elluminate sessions (access the site here: Elluminate session) with course facilitators.

Martin Weller of the Open University, UK (and author of the Centralization Dilemma paper listed above) will be our guest speaker.

Time: 8:00 p.m. Moscow, 5:00 p.m. London, 12 noon New York, 9:00 a.m. Los Angeles, midnight Thursday Beijing.Conversions to different time zones

Time: 8:00 p.m. Moscow, 5:00 p.m. London, 12 noon New York, 9:00 a.m. Los Angeles, midnight Thursday Beijing. Conversions to different time zones

Sessions information can be found here.

Activities this week:

Continue reflecting on the tools and processes that you utilize in learning online. Download CMAP and begin to detail the tools you use in managing your learning. In particular, focus on the concepts that influence your learning process. How important is personal control over your data? How important is a particular set of tools? How would you adjust if one or more of the tools listed disappeared due to acquisition of the company? Later in thecourse we'll discuss the tools needed for effective PLE/N implementation, so this activity is a foreshadowing of that discussion.

All course participants are asked to consider making a final video/presentation/animation of PLE/N role in education today. Being planning what your presentation might look like - how will you communicate your message? Explore examples of educational videos or presentations that you have found to be particularly effective at communicating online (RSA or Common Craft, for example).

Information is available for learners who wish to pursue self/peer evaluation in the course.

Weaving a Personal Web: Using online technologies to create customized, connected, and dynamic learning environments
George Siemens (gsiemens) , September 19, 2010.
This paper is from 2009 and, like any good paper on technology, adds yet another acronym to the PLE/PLN/LMS mix: Personal web technologies (PWT). "To navigate the Internet more efficiently, individuals can assemble a virtual toolbox from an ever-growing list of free, and often open-source, technologies to aid in aggregating, organizing, and publishing information online. When personal web technologies are used for educational or training purposes, they offer learners the flexibility to choose from a variety of tools and methods to accomplish their goals. Each individual has the opportunity to choose how they manage online resources according to their own preferences." [Link] [Comment]

Challenging the dominant design of educational systems
George Siemens (gsiemens) , September 19, 2010.
Scott Wilson picked up on our use of his paper (Challenging the dominant design of educational systems) in week one and has started a discussion thread in Moodle. From the discussion: "I''m actually very supportive of institutions - after all I do work for one, and work closely with its central IT department! I am, however, critical of many institutional technology policies and strategies. Challenging these is I believe necessary to enable HE institutions to survive the pressures they are now beginning to face.
This paper was my attempt to tease out the properties that have emerged from years of using central IT systems, and to compare that with posited properties of an alternative design, and the barriers it would have to overcome to become mainstream." [Link] [Comment]

Discussion Posts

Today we introduce the fourth and final type of link to be included in the Daily, discussion list posts. Each week, PLENK moves to a new weekly discussion forum. You can see them all here. All course participants can log in and post their own thoughts. Each day's posts will be listed in this Discussion session of the newsletter.

, Week One General Discussion
by Alan Cooper.  Much of the discussion this week has addressed the (often quite subtle) distinctions between the Personal Learning Environment and the Personal Learning Network which it supports (and which is itself part of the personal environment). But there is also some (deliberate?) ambiguity within each of the PLE(orN) concepts which I think may be more significant. By a PLE we may mean that part of the personal (digital) environment which supports learning, ie the Personal .... [Link] 2010-09-18T19:53:03

PLE vs infromation fluency
, Week One General Discussion
by Alfredo Calderon.  Is it possible that an individual that does not possess organization skills can develop them as a result of creating a PLE? In Educause 7 Things you should know about PLE it states that "many students lack the information fluency necessary to recognize when a writer speaks from authority, for example, or when a narrative is opinion." Isn't this one of the outcomes of the [Link] 2010-09-18T17:04:28

Coming up against the institution
, Week One General Discussion
by Ken Masters.  Hi AllAn issue raised in this course is the need for institutional support - not merely money (although that would be nice) - when trying innovative things in education. Too frequently, at the whims of who knows, institutions have rules and policies that interfere with this kind of innovation, and it's sad when teachers and students have to find work-arounds in order to engage in education. Tip: when you don't know the work-around, ask the students. If they don&.... [Link] 2010-09-18T05:03:06

Term "Learning" appropriate in PLE?
, Week One General Discussion
by Marian Casey.  I'm struggling to keep up with the amount of information and discussion generated in this forum and wonder when the actual learning will begin for me. Although we've been provided with extensive visual examples of PLE's in the course materials, I find little information on how to manage the PLE as a learning experience or if learning will even occur. My experience with learning experiences involves a clear description of learning objectives or personal .... [Link] 2010-09-17T21:18:16

, Week One General Discussion
by Sheila slbacon.  Week One.....A lot of the language and acronyms used in this course and most of the Internet tools are new to me. I am taking this course to learn about the tools by using them to support my own learning. I now have a google account, have an i-google page, have read about and plan to use google docs for a project, will use Eluminate for the same project (need to train to be moderator), found the Plenk 2010 symbaloo last night and thought it was cool ( want to figure .... by Patricia Fidalgo.  Me, Fernando Luis Santos and João Paz (all from Portugal) had the idea to creat a resources list of tools used to build a PLE/N. Knowledge and Learning
, Week One General Discussion
by Kai Peters.  I’ve been following the various discussions with interest and thought I’d pipe in with a short piece about knowledge and learning. As one so nicely says, there are many ways to skin a cat. Two models of learning may be useful here. Pedler (1974) distinguishes between neuromotor knowledge (manual labour); cognition (I know facts); behaviour (I know about feelings); interpersonal (I can get along) and self knowledge. Huczynski (1983) classifies into memory (got the facts).... [Link] 2010-09-17T13:20:02

Knowing about vs Knowing how
, Week One General Discussion
by Chris Saeger.  I enjoy the discussions about ple, pln and epistemology. However, when I came to the course I was hoping to get more of how to do a PLE/N. I know bit about rss feeds google search feeds etc. I don't know how to use yahoo pipes to filter feeds etc. To quote E. O. PLE Set Up By Institution
, Week One General Discussion
by Heather Ross.  Perhaps we're going to get to this later in the course, or maybe someone has already talked about it on this discussion board, but here's my question. If an institution sets up PLEs for students using something like Elgg is that really that much better than an LMS? The students are still at the whim of whatever the institution chose to use. Does the institution maintain the set-up even after students have graduated (or dropped out)? Some PLE questions
, Week One General Discussion
by Vilimaka Foliaki.  Based on what I've read thus far on PLE, this idea is basically about shifting the design of education from focusing on the 'course of study' to the learner through the use of more liberal values and non-restrictive tools (such as Web 2.0 tools). PLE is a beautiful idea. In the formal classroom, every responsible teacher's dream is for her/his students to be able to understand the core concepts and principles in the course of study and be able to apply .... by jordi jordiguim. Definitions PLE
, Week One General Discussion
by Stefanie Panke.   From this week's reading list, I have compiled a collection of definitions for the concept PLE that others may find useful. Is this MOOC a PLE?
, Week One General Discussion
by Steven Greene.  Of course it is, isn't it? It could even be the most valuble part of my PLE. The language is hard for me to get around. I think my learning environment must be something that I create, but there must also be other larger entities that are accessed, this MOOC being only one of several possibilities. I am the nucleus of my own PLE with dendrites reaching out into other larger and more organized learning environments, thus if I use this branch, rather than another .... [Link] 2010-09-15T04:24:58

Focusing a PLE/PLN with a Personal Intuitive Map
J.G. Chesney, Sparks & Flashes
I have just completed my first week of #PLENK2010, which is the first MOOC (massive open online course) in which I have participated.  I joined the course because I was interested in the concept of PLE/PLNs (personal learning environment or personal learning network), particularly in the work around creating naming conventions and visualizations around the process of personal learning, a process that I wonder if can ever truly be pinned down and mapped? In my case, having worked online .... [Link] 2010-09-20T05:03:00

PLENK2010 Week 1 - bits and pieces of reflection
, Työn ja oppimisen murroksen ihmettelyä.
Week 2 is about to begin in PLENK2010, but I haven’t got time (or effort) to reflect my thoughts enough. But when I skimmed the Week 1 discussions of the fellow students - currently about 1500 registered! - I got some interesting new views for my thinking, especially the role of PLE/PLN’s and their “positions”, “roles” and “responsibilities” in learning. My friend Heli threw an interesting another three letter acronym PLP, meaning Personal .... [Link] 2010-09-20T02:05:00

So, What Have I Learned This Week? (Jim Stauffer), connectJim
At one point I thought I could understand PLE vs. PLN as a clear (if somewhat arbitrary) distinction between tools and sources. That was premature. I partially understand the "ecology v.s. environment" exchange in the "PLEs and PLNs" discussion. The term "ecology" is suggested as an alternative to distinguishing between the environment and the network. I've used this as my starting point on my diagram (detailed view here)To me there is a distinction between the environment and the network, .... [Link] 2010-09-18T07:26:00

I'm half-ways busy testing the water with a MOOC being offered by George Siemens, TEKRI, Stephen Downes, NRC, Dave Cormier, UPEI, Rita Kop, NRC. It's called PLENK2010 and it's got a bunch of different [Link] 2010-09-17T16:50:00

PLE thoughts: #PLENK2010
Graham Glass, Graham Glass, etc.
I recently signed up to participate in Stephen Downe's PLENK 2010 (Personal Learning Environments, Networks and Knowledge) online course. The main reason for this is because I'm working on EDU20.NET, the EDU 2.0 personalized social learning network, and wanted to... [Link] 2010-09-17T05:51:21

PLENK Open Course – PLE’s / PLN’s
jrandersoniii, James Anderson III
Finally getting a chance to emerge myself in the PLENK open-course of Personal Learning Environments (PLE's) or Personal Learning Networks (PLN's).  With the start of the semester a lot of things have fallen to the side, including my dissertation, migrating my personal website, and a couple work projects. But as I have started reviewing some [...] [Link] 2010-09-17T21:37:12

Summary - my first week in #PLENK2010
Linn, Jakten på den perfekta lektionen
So far in PLENK2010, I have learned thatPLE means Personal Learning Environment.PLN means Personal Learning Network. To me, right now, my iGoogle works as my PLE, including both my Google Reader, a few bookmarks (this blog, the Daily from the course, etc) and some tools like calender and Google [Link] 2010-09-18T08:44:00

#PLENK2010 Coffee Break - Distance Learning
Linn, Jakten på den perfekta lektionen
I love distance learning. What I miss is coffee breaks. To sit down in a cosy place, with other people and a cup of coffee for a 15 minutes break. Chat about nonsens... Very important part of everything (studying, working) here in Sweden :-)So, how can the coffee breaks be a part of a distance course? (The distance educators in Sweden struggle to help the students complete the course). Can virtual coffeebreaks help? Skype videocalls now work for ten persons..But then, of course, everybody .... So I was checking the #plenk2010 Twitter stream on Hootsuite the day after our first PLENK2010 Elluminate session (recording available here) and I saw a lot of re-tweets for this blog post – PLENK 2010: Just Like ‘Watching Football’ – … Continue reading → [Link] 2010-09-18T09:03:41

The Curation Debate – Plenk2010
Viplav Baxi, Viplav Baxi's Meanderings
Yesterday’s session seemed to be interesting. I missed it but was catching up on the recording. One part of it, around Curation (at least where it initially started), was especially interesting, not only from the point of view of what was being discussed, but also as an interesting example of the anatomy of the “narrative [...] [Link] 2010-09-18T06:42:02

Diverging thoughts started by Institutions vs. PLNs debate (Vahid), Vahid's PLENK2010 Experience
Warning: this post got started on one thing, and then went all over the place. It might take some forbearance to go through it all. Alternatively, pick a paragraph or two and then go on doing something else, before you pick your next paragraphs. It's been a long day.As i am moving forward in my reading of the suggested documents and discussions on the forum, i am struck with the idea that PLE/Ns proponents can go pretty far in their demands: It would seem that through PLNs (i&.... Building a PLN in my PLE
Kim Mc, Learning Journal for #PLENK2010
I have been digesting the reading/information that I have done over the past few days to gain a perspective on my PLE and PLN.I have been thinking, and comparing my newly developing Personal Learning Network with my existing networks role as a mum required the development of various networks such as school, soccer, playgroup, mothers group and my existing friends. These networks took time & effort to build but I used the social tools that I was very used to...face to face skills like .... A Deliberate and Effective PLE
Steve Mackenzie, Learnadoodledastic
Initial reading that has help me to formulate my opinion on this topic is the excellent Developing Personal learning networks for open and social learning article by Alec Courous who explains the rationale for choosing a primary free and open learning environment and describing the course facilitation model to promote an open an social personal learning network, John Mak's Research into the Design and Delivery of MOOC blog post which contains a number of prompts in relation to open and .... making progress (Skupik), Skupiktalk
#plenk2010 I was able to make a little movie today using the online program that Patricio recommended.  It was just a little reminder about an up-coming meeting, but I hope it proves effective.  I am very interested to learn about wikis because they seem to be useful when you want group input.   I may not be following the program in discussing PLEs, but I feel I am in one.  [Link] 2010-09-18T03:36:00

PLENK2010 First Week
, PLE's, networks, knowledge & me
Like a sword that cuts, but cannot cut itself; Like an eye that sees, but cannot see itself. #PLENK2010 is much like the hundred acre woods  here are many things to see but it is hard to find the way. The week has two major themes for me: The underlying philosophy of learning both for a massive open online course and PLEs. I sum it up as enacting an ecology for increasing possibilities for action. all knowing is doing (Maturana & Varela, .... [Link] 2010-09-17T21:22:00

¿.... [Link] 2010-09-18T00:37:00
