CCK09 Individualism – Collectivism
I have read the article titled ‘New structures of learning: the systemic impact of connective knowledge’ (Siemens, 2008). I’m interested in a discussion relating to Individualism vs Collectivism. In this regard, I feel that Masaki Yuki’s papers on Social Psychology are very interesting. Refer to URL: [http://lynx.let.hokudai.ac.jp/~myuki/]. Reference: Siemens, G. (2008). New structures and spaces of learning: [...] December 2, 2009

CCK09 Workplace Learning
Today I presented some information on Social Media and Connectivism to a group of ESL teachers at my workplace. I enjoyed being able to share some of the things I’ve learnt in CCK09. Of course, there was a lot of information to cover in this 30 minute ‘inservice’ session. At least the theory of Connectivism [...] December 2, 2009

Technology & Demographics in the US
by Kerry Dobbins.

I've wondered if the changes of the digital world will lead to a new division of haves and have-nots, but I should have learned the lessons of my professional research: people always express agency and will often use whatever resources they can get their hands on. This story features some people who are doing just that (the couple who use a smart phone because it is cheaper than broadband and a computer).

This story was on National Public Radio this morning (another aside: radio was nearly non-existent for years for me, now that I can stream it at work and download entire shows, I listen obsessively).

Otherwise, the kids they interview are hilarious; texting the person you are talking to?! I can barely send a text!:

Re: Speed is the new divide
by roy williams.

Hi Kerry, a while back someone (?) coined the phrase: "speed is the new divide".  I had occasion to work with the Commonwealth of Learning some time back, and got access to their super-broadband (as it was at the time).

The point was that broadband speeds (for the few) have already caught up with, and overtaken, the speed of thought (at least for me).  In practice, this is simple: when you click on a new link, it comes up so instantaneously that your thoughts and your ability to respond to what's new on your screen lag behind. That's the point at which the net becomes 'transparent' - you really dont notice its there, because response time tends to zero, and the process of 'connecting' disappears, in effect, which is the gold standard of all media (e.g. the constant camera movements in NYPD Blue, if you are interested in television, which you wont see unless you look really hard).

That said, you are then faced with the (nice) problem of what to do with all this stuff that you can access transparently.  Its a bit like what Lisa described in her masterful review of life on web 2.0, as 'like drinking from a fire-hose'.

Re: Final Presentation
by Heli Nurmi.

Hi Michelle
I listened to your presentation and liket it very much. Its is clearly organised and possible to follow albeit my language is not English. I think the most important is your ability to answer straight to questions given - not easy questions but you could do it. Congratulations!

The challenge of appropriate filtering will become greatest ...?

Educational System Renewal (redux).
by A One.

(what happened to week 12)

I think that the education system is sorely in need of dramatic change. As the readings for this week indicate, the current system is broken, and unsustainable. Even some school boards (in my jurisdiction) agree. And the situation is no different in HE.

So what to do? Turn it over to OER, like Stephen suggests?

Should current evaluation systems be changed/removed? What is the place of certification, in a (more) open access to knowledge ecology (OAKE)?

by Ken Anderson.

HI Roy, thanks for taking the time to express your preferences in detail. I guess I am coming from a different place. One of my paradigms is that conflict can be productive. I acknowledge that the amount of conflict acceptable differs among individual tastes, and I am not talking about physical conflict, while again acknowledging that verbal conflict can be harmful to many. In short: loud, strong arguments are ok by me and I prefer to stay away from ad hominem attacks. For example, I like how Catherine defended herself:

Nicola, we can start here, I think it is easier and we are starting right now, without any delay. We can also schedule an online meeting in Wiziq
February is OK for me

Hi Roy. Wow. Fragility of will to learn. I guess that would be one understanding.

I cannot help but think that maybe this individual (and others of the same ilk) take themselves and learning TOO seriously?
