Week 6: Complex Adaptive Systems
Week 6 readings have now been posted. Live session will be held Thurs at 2 pm CST. Link and time zone conversion can be found by following the link.
Complex adaptive systems (CAS) are a significant shift in thinking. Instead of seeing the world as a mechanistic structure that produces set outcomes, CAS states that multiple interacting elements respond continually to feedback from each other and the environment. As such, it is difficult to predict outcomes. This limitation suggests that since outcomes are not always knowable, our attention is best served when directed at the elements interacting and the nature of their interactions.

Setting goals and planning learning activities is important. Learning about a specific subject requires intention. At the start of CCK09, I noticed several participants planning how they were going to interact with course content and with others (hopefully they'll provide a follow up of how successful they were). Plain Gillian shares a mid-course strategy for getting more involved in CCK09:
1. Every day I must post at least one thing to either the Moodle forum or on someones blog
2. Each week I must post at least one blog entry
3. I should check the Twitter feeds on #CCK09 more often
4. I should post things I find regarding CCK09 on Twitter

Where have all the people gone?
CCK09 is quite different from CCK08, but similarities exist. For example, last week, Ailsa Haxell posed a question in Moodle: Where have all the people gone? The discussion ranged from suggestions that perhaps connectivism no longer captures attention...to a few individuals posting about reasons why they have been lurking...to several posts comparing interaction patterns in CCK08 and CCK09. Interestingly, similar patterns of forum interactions exist. Is it content of the last few weeks that reduces activity? Or is it just what happens after the initial flurry of activity at the start of the course?

CCK09 Is a scientific approach towards learning important?Feynman in this video provides a unique perspective on social science. It sounds challenging to most social scientists.
I agree on the rigorous checks that are necessary on any “Theory” based on a scientific approach. It would be useful to adopt a scientific approach in exploring the multiple forms of truths. May be it’s important to reflect [...]

the new thingSince the start of the PLE/PLN week I have been thinking about why I selected a LMS for this years new thing instead of encouraging a more individually driven PLE/PLN (do it yourself) approach.Teachers were asking for help with writing wikis, student email, chat forums, discussion groups and a few other things. It was becomming a problem for me since everyone was using something different and I

CommentsWhy this system doesn't have the capability to email me when there is an unmoderated comment I don't know. There is an option to email me comments once they are moderated (which is silly because at that point I already know they exist) but no option to tell me to come look and moderate something, or if there is I havn't found it yet. I can only guess that they are assuming you will login

CCK09 Educational LeadershipI found this article on Educational Leadership interesting and challenging.
A critique on Dr. Fenwick English’s book:
Pros of Postmodernism
Multiple Forms of Truth
Logic and Intuition
Modification of Temporary Understanding
Ability to Exercise Choice
Human Diversity and the Pursuit of Multiple Truths
Theories in themselves are not the target of postmodernism.
Postmodernism opposes theory based practices…
Theory based practices are those which propose one basic [...]

CCK09 * PLE & PLN Conference * 13-16 Oct 2009I particularly liked Steve Wheeler’s Presentation for the Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) and Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) Conference held between 13-16th October, 2009. It was a generous project to present this conference to online learners. I feel that Steve articulated the concepts of PLN & PLE very well. A website that I feel is also useful in [...]

CCK09 Course – Reflections – Week 4 – S. Downes articleI read the article titled ‘Learning Networks and Connective Knowledge’ by Stephen Downes Oct 2006 at URL: [http://it.coe.uga.edu/itforum/paper92/paper92.html]. Stephen’s view is that Connectivism is derived from Pragmatics. It may be noted that Professor M.A.K. Halliday devised a theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics which has been influential in classroom contexts. Consideration of Halliday’s theory of linguistics in relation to Connectivism [...]
