Week 4 Recording
The recording from our elluminate session last night has now been posted under "week 4" on the recordings page. Dave Cormier dropped into the conversation and we spent time discussing his rhizome article... , , October 8, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

CCK09 Thoughts
Papers for the first connectivism assignment are starting to roll in. This paper reviews CCK09 to date, discussing knowledge-as-connectedness and the external social connections. Then, the author address areas of connectivism she is comfortable with...and areas that cause concern. In particular, the author argues that the neural network model is too prominent, and states "philosophies that are entirely dependent on scientific models look arbitrary and bizarre when the science they depended on is superseded". This is an observation worth more discussion (and I hope its picked up on the blog or the moodle forum). Is the neural illustration a metaphor? Or is it the model itself? , , October 8, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

Second Life Meeting
As we've said since the start of this course: it's impossible to keep track of everything happening. The key is to find an area of interest and form connections with others in that space who have a similar interest. I haven't been active in Second Life in CCK09. But, the group has been meeting on a regular basis. If you're interested, please join them on Sunday... , , October 8, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

Participation
I have had several courses now with George Siemens and one thing that puzzled me from the very beginning was the impression that he is very against 'lurking'. Seems to me that he really doesn't like those who are learning and not contributing back at the others. It really didn't make sense to me, because when I look at most of my online activity it could be considered as lurking. I learn a lot October 9, 2009

Collaborative concept mapping
One of the most challenging things about Second Life teaching is that you are never completely in control. Students can use instant message as a background to a lecture, they can text chat during a lecture, or they can even “tune out” altogether by watching a You Tube video, or going for a sandwich. [...] October 9, 2009

On Connective Knowledge
This week’s Connectivism and Connective Knowledge readings were particularly challenging as they prompted me to reflect on my own epistemological beliefs and assumptions considering knowledge and learning in general.  Consider what you think intelligence means?  What constitutes knowledge and truth; or is there even such a thing?  What about the fact that we are increasingly [...] October 9, 2009

Knowledge ... not as I know it.
Reading with interest about knowledge and what it is. Haven't been so deep in philosophy before but find it a very interesting question.

Should we be concerned with a theory of knowing rather than theories of knowledge? Ernst von Glaserfield's 2500 year summary of sceptical thought provides a background to what he describes as radical constructivism.

Is knowledge about a thing or does it emerge from the interactions we have (without ever being a thing)? Stephen Downes goes deep into the Emergentist Alternative and builds the case for connectivism and "e-learning 2.0". October 9, 2009

CCK09: Notes on Learning Networks and Connective Knowledge
Over the last few days I’ve been working through Stephen Downes’ paper Learning Networks and Connective Knowledge. I often struggle to get through these longer works and actually pull anything relevant out of them, and this is definitely a longer work (over 12,000 words, just over 29 pages pasted in Word). I used Diigo to [...] October 9, 2009
