What about teaching?
A discussion in the Moodle forum contains a couple longish posts from m,e (Stephen) on Connectivism and teaching. "Insofar as there is a pedagogy attached to Connectivism, I contend that it involves more and more removing students from a structured and managed classroom environment, and more and more providing means for them to be immersed in communities of practitioners, and for this to happen at a younger and younger age, and in addition, to more and more create in practitioners the expectation and responsibility of working openly and including new and inexperienced members into their communities." Four Struggles
This is a presentation I (Stephen) gave Friday at St. Thomas University. It addresses the phenomenon of globalization as it is impacted by new models of organization based on networks. Stephen Downes, Stephen's Web, October 7, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

50 Great Examples of Data Visualization
You will want to linger over this page as it offers example after example of ways to visualize data, many of them in the form of networks. In addition, see many many more examples at the Visual Complexity website. Cameron Chapman, WDD, October 7, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

Thoughts on Connectivism
I believe this is a blog post from a (graduate?) course on learning theory. The author states that: "As far as the implications of this for education, I think it is essential that I, as well as the rest of our profession, become literate in this regard. Although I don't think we should base our entire educational system around the digital world, we can't continue to stick our heads in the mud and pretend that technology isn't a reality in the lives of our youth. As much as I may find it to be a humbling experience to realize that I have a lot to learn if I have any hope of staying connected/becoming connected with my students, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a trained professional to step out of his or her comfort zone in an effort to stay up to date in his or her craft. Medicine, law, engineering and most every other profession requires its members to stay on top of the latest innovations and ensure best practice, so it is fair to expect the same out of education."

Uncovering Connections on Twitter Could Become Big Business
This article focuses on finding/evaluating Twitter connections. Many services - such as facebook and linkedin - recommend friends. Social networking sites are moving to more advanced analytics: who are you connected to? How often do you interact? Which connections will help have the greatest impact on your network? Visualization of data is rapidly developing into a useful tool. Once data is in a database, new insights can be gleaned as visualization software develops. , , October 6, 2009 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]
