Community Responsibility Vol 1 - OMG Is This a Community?
Dave Cormier looks at the distinction between community and networks through a conversation with Nancy White, a presentation from Bud Hunt, and an unattributed presentation on community management and open source. "If you are in a community," writes Cormier, "you are, in some way, responsible to that community, in a network you are responsible to yourself and the rules that govern you are those set forth by our society as laws." Recordings: Howard Rheingold
We have posted the recordings from the discussion with Howard Rheingold...and the open discussion in the evening. Here is the Howard Rheingold Recording and here is the evening Elluminate Session (both as Elluminate recordings). Various Authors, CCK08, November 13, 2008 [Link] [Tags: none] [Comment]

Intervention in Students' Learning
What happens when our education process (i.e. curriculum) is imposed on students outside of their direct interests? Jenny reflects on our session with Howard Rheingold...and draws on an experience she had with a previous student who was performing below expected competence: "He said he hadn't come on the course to jump through hoops to get high marks for his assignments. He wanted to pursue his own lines of enquiry and follow his own interests. If he was going to spend a lot of time writing an assignment, he wanted to be sure that it met his own needs. He would do enough to pass, but he wanted to enjoy writing the assignment for himself. If he could do that and pass, then he was quite happy with the mark he got."
